Indroduction
The Federation is a very well rounded race and it is the race I would recommend for beginning players. I say this because all of their special weapons, special and super ships (or buildings) are very straight forward and easy to use, so why not always use the Federation and ignore the other races, well, the other races have more potential and can cause more damage (in my opinion) if used skillfully and properly. In contrast I would recommend not using the Federation if you are an adept player, that way you can use the more advanced tactics of the other races.
Using their ships
Base construction is as outlined in the the 'General Strategy' section and will be this way for all races. The Defiant is a nice and well rounded ship, especially when used with it's antimatter mines, which do moderate damage, they can be effective in groups, I am not entirely sure about this, since I don't know each ship's shield strength I can's say for sure, but to me it seems that the Defiant has weaker shields and hull strength than the other destroyers. Steamrunners are very, very nice, they give a huge edge against Klingons and Borg, but they're not quite as nice as the Romulan raptor, but they do give you an advantage. A good strategy to use with their engine disabeler is to either lead enemys into a black hole or one of your heavily fortified areas, disable their engines, and their inertia will carry them right into harm's way, you can also disable their engines if they were initially stationery or moving slowly and pick them off with the powerful tri-cobalt torpedoes, now I've never really gotten the chance to employ the tactics I've just laid out, but theoretically, they are sound tactics. Akiras are nice also, but they also seem weaker in general in comparison with the other races' cruiser1's. Akiras possess the chain reaction pulsar(CRT, I'm assuming you already know what it is and how it works) it is a devastating weaon if used around lots of enemy ships or buildings. The Sovereign is also a good ship, it's Corbomite reflector (CR) is a mediocre weapon, but I don't think its nearly as good as the other battleships' special weapon, you should put your soverigns in a group, and use the corbomite reflector all at once, most players try not to fire on sovys witht the CR on, so it's good for firing on your enemies while they do have the option of shooting back, but msut pay a price if they choose to do so. The Federation's Nebula Class ship is allright, some of it's weapons are useless, but this seems to be the same for other special ships. I recommend the Gemini Effect, and the Shield disruptor. The engineering team is mediocre, it can quickly repair a ship, but most of the time, 1 repaired ship isn't going to help you that awfully much, and I can't remember what the other weapon was so it can't be terribly important. The shield disruptor disables the shields of multiple targets in a radius, this is especially effective for turning the tide in a losing battle or starbase assaults, no target will last very long without it's shields, more often than not, you will lose your nebula in the process, but if executed in the right spot, it is usually worth the 1100? dilithium. You'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge, I just don't feel like running the game everytime I want to get some measely statistic for some ship. Now for the temporal distortion building, this is the main reason I say the Feds are the easiest to use, all the other races' super units must be strategically and correctly used, this is not the case with the feds, just find the place with the highest concentration of enemy units, plop a bubble down there and send the fleet to wipe that area out, this can just ruin your opponents whole day. I highly recommend building it when resources permit, now a tactic I've found to be useful; if you've got 10000 dilithium to spare, build 2 temporal buildings, you get to use the bubble twice as often.
